A police officer who was shot multiple times in Tacoma while responding to a domestic violence call was in surgery Wednesday night while police worked to arrest a barricaded suspect, authorities said.

Tacoma Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said police responded to a Tacoma home Wednesday afternoon in the 400 block of East 52nd Street and that shortly after arriving, officers called for backup.

Arriving officers then got a shots fired call, entered the home and got the wounded officer outside and to a hospital, Cool said. She said the officer was undergoing surgery Wednesday night.

She said it wasn't immediately clear what led up to the shooting and didn't know the extent of the officer's injuries.

Cool said police believe the suspect remained barricaded with a gun inside the home. She said the neighborhood was locked down while law enforcement worked to arrest the suspect.

She also said it's possible the suspect could have left while police were removing the wounded officer from the scene and said that's why the large neighborhood perimeter had been set up.
