Infant found in Detroit home with dead mother

DETROIT - An infant is fighting for her life after she was left alone with her mother’s dead body for several days.

Detroit police say the victim was found by her mother after she hadn’t heard from her in a while.

Charmenek Johnson, 31, was found dead in a home in the 4000 block of Hazelwood with trauma to her head on Monday. Her baby girl, who can’t even walk yet, was left unattended with the body.

Scripps station WXYZ 7 Action News has learned the child is in critical condition at Children’s hospital.

"The baby needed to be changed, baby was hungry," said Anna Maria Borders, Johnson’s friend. "And then the mother wasn't responding. Crying for her mama and her mama wasn't responding -- that's a bad feeling."

Friends say Johnson lived for the little girl.

"All she wanted to do was make sure she had a life for her daughter, and that's what she worked for," said Keysha McMillian, another friend of Johnson. "For somebody to do this to her and take that baby from her, I can't even explain or have the words to explain or describe it at all."

Police have not yet commented on any suspects.
