ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The ex-wife of an Arizona inmate accused of killing an Oklahoma couple after a prison break says "it was a matter of life and death" when she got a call from him in the middle of the night.
That call came just hours after John McCluskey's escape from a medium-security prison near Kingman, Ariz. McCluskey, a fellow inmate and their accomplice had just kidnapped a pair of truckers and needed another ride.
Joy Glattfelder testified Tuesday in McCluskey's capital murder trial.
McCluskey is accused of gunning down the Oklahoma retirees while he and the others were on the run.
Glattfelder told jurors that she didn't immediately know what had happened when she went to pick up McCluskey and the others in Flagstaff but that something wasn't right. She knew he was supposed to be "locked up."
