DEMING, NM - All that remains of the vehicles involved in a fiery crash along Interstate 10 in southwestern New Mexico are charred hunks of nearly indiscernible metal.
New Mexico State Police say six people were killed in the crash that occurred during a sudden dust storm Thursday afternoon in Hidalgo County, several miles from the Arizona border.
Police say that three passenger vehicles, one recreational vehicle and three commercial vehicles were involved. Photographs show the burned-out shell of what was left of a car along with the twisted metal frames of several tractor trailer rigs.
The exact sequence of events is still under investigation. The victims' identities have not yet been released.
The interstate was shut down in both directions following the crash. The road is open Friday but authorities say the speed limit has been reduced.
