DENVER, CO - A Denver mother is in jail after police say she abused her 2-month-old so badly, the infant was left brain dead. The child died at an area hospital Thursday evening.
Arrest records for Kelsy Newell-Skinner, 21, indicate she sent a text message to her ex-boyfriend on July 27 saying, "She must have been very drunk last night because she just woke up and the baby had been beaten."
According to the arrest affidavit, another text said, "The baby's head was banged up and her eyes were bruised and swollen shut."
Denver police said they were called to Children's Hospital in Aurora at 11 p.m. that night. Arrest records say the child's grandmother brought the baby to Parker Adventist Hospital and the baby was transported to Children's Hospital with "severe bruising on her head, a swollen left eye, fractured ribs and suspected bite marks on her left thigh area."
Police said Newell-Skinner also has a 15-month-old and three other kids under 5 years old.
The arrest report says Newell-Skinner sent the text message to her ex about the baby's injuries at noon on Sunday, and was still at her apartment on East Hamden Avenue with the child at 2:30 p.m. It says, by that point, Newell-Skinner had called her mother, and ran from the apartment when her mom arrived.
Newell-Skinner's mother told police that the first text she had received from her daughter that day was one saying she was depressed she didn't have any money.
Newell-Skinner was arrested Sunday on investigation of felony child abuse causing serious bodily injury. The child's death will likely lead to more serious charges. The mother is being held on $50,000 bond.
