Wheelchair-bound suspect captured after Chula Vista robbery, pursuit

SAN DIEGO - A wheelchair-bound robbery suspect was taken into custody Tuesday evening near downtown San Diego after leading Chula Vista police officers on a long chase.

At about 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a robbery near the Kmart in the 800 block of East H Street in Chula Vista. A Kmart employee allegedly confronted the man in the parking after he was suspected of stealing numerous items. The suspect brandished a handgun in a threatening manner and left in a maroon van that had disabled plates, the employee said.

A Chula Vista police lieutenant saw the suspect's van get onto northbound Interstate 805 from East H Street. Officers attempted to stop the van in San Diego but he refused to pull over. He then led Chula Vista police on a lengthy pursuit through San Diego.

San Diego police joined the chase, and tried placing spike strips in the path of the van. An SDPD helicopter also assisted in the pursuit, which ended in the parking lot of SDPD headquarters near downtown San Diego.

Chula Vista police Lt. Buddy Magor told 10News the suspect emerged from the van and surrendered, following commands without a struggle.

His name was not immediately released.
