Brazilian teen offers virginity for money on YouTube

SAPEACU, Brazil - A Brazilian teenage girl is offering her virginity in exchange for money.

Rebecca Bernardo, an 18-year-old student from Sapeacu, Brazil, turned to YouTube in hopes of auctioning off her virginity in an act of desperation.

"My name is Rebecca, I'm here to auction off my virginity," she said in the video she posted to YouTube a few months ago. One YouTube version of the story was posted as early as November.

Bernardo's mother recently suffered a stroke and is now bedridden, unable to feed herself or accomplish small chores on her own.

"I made up my mind right after my 18th birthday," Bernardo said of her decision. "That's when my mother suffered a stroke."

Sapeacu is a small town where neighbors know each other well, according to a CNN report.

"When she started the auction people in the street threw coins at her but I never looked at her differently," a local mechanic said in the YouTube video.

While the auction first created tension in her hometown, many neighbors seem to have grown sympathetic to her situation. They told CNN that her sister died a few years ago and she never knew her father.

Though Bernardo tried working as a waitress and selling cosmetics, she said that she was not able to make ends meet. The cost of her mother's medical bills and caretaker were too much for her to pay for alone.

"There comes a time when you have to make decisions to get what you want, you have to be strong," she said in a CNN report.

When her video was newly posted, a TV network in her hometown offered to pay for her mother's medical bills, but Bernardo now has bigger dreams.

Bernardo told CNN that she is aspiring to gain the success of another Brazilian woman, Catarina Migliorini, who auctioned off her virginity through YouTube and not only received a large sum of money, but also modeling contracts.

After the TV offer fell through, the auction was put back into place.

Bernardo told CNN that she has had three bids, the highest being $35,000.

Though Bernardo began the auction to help her mother and to overcome extreme medical expenses, her mom does not agree with her tactic.

"She should look for work, she shouldn't prostitute herself," her mom told CNN.

Bernardo is no longer just auctioning her virginity for her mother's sake, but also to begin a new life in another town. She hopes to start a new life for herself.

"It's a lot of responsibility to face alone – and I'm not prepared," she said in the CNN report.
