Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio raised $890,000 in first 5 months of 2014

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio raised $890,000 in campaign contributions in the first five months of 2014.

A campaign finance report released Wednesday says Arpaio has $1.7 million on hand for his 2016 re-election campaign.

Most of the contributions are made by out-of-state donors.

The six-term sheriff's campaign fund was depleted after he spent $8 million during the 2012 election cycle.

But Arpaio replenished his fund in 2013 and survived an unsuccessful effort to force a recall election against him.

Last month, Arpaio announced that he wouldn't enter the governor's race.

That marked the fifth time since 1998 that he has flirted with -- and ultimately decided against -- seeking the state's highest office.

Arpaio would have been required to resign immediately if he had decided to run for governor.
