New River explosion update: Steven Lane talks to ABC15 about losing most of his leg

NEW RIVER, AZ - A man who stepped on an explosive device and lost part of his left leg outside a New River home earlier this month talked to ABC15 about what happened.

"I was like, 'Where's my boot, where's my foot?' And I remember dragging myself across," said Steven Lane, 49, who was helping a friend-of-a-friend move out when he took that life-changing step on Nov. 4.

"I don't know if I stepped on or swished something. From what I remember I think I swished something then it was just, 'Boom!'" Lane said.

The next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital.

In addition to losing part of his left leg, Lane suffered severe burns and his hands were black from being on fire.

Fragments of metal are also stuck behind his eyes.

The explosion happened outside a home near 27th Avenue and New River Road.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said three additional hand grenades were found on the property and were disposed of by a bomb technician.
