In November 2006, the woman apparently called the
Tom Leykis Show, claiming she murdered her boyfriend and got away with it.
“You shot him?” Leykis asked during the call.
“Oh yes, I did.”
“You shot him dead?”
“I did,” bragged the caller.
Listen to the original call on the Tom Leykis Show.Nearly two years later, investigators believe it was 30-year-old Megan Suzanne Vice who called the show. Police think she shot and killed Tortsen Rockwood.
During the radio segment Leykis said, "So you shot and killed him." Vice replied, "With his own 9mm right in the heart. And you know I'm a nurse so I know right where to aim for."
Initially, both police and an autopsy report ruled Rockwood’s death a suicide. Detectives reopened the case after hearing the call.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office will now review the case and decide if charges will be filed. In the meantime, Vice remains a free woman.
Police combed through thousands of cell phone records and eventually traced Vice’s cell phone to the call that was made to the Leykis show.
Detectives also discovered Vice tried to get rid of her cell phone the day after she allegedly called the show.
“She filed what we believe to be a false police report the following day alleging her cell phone had been stolen or missing at the time the caller placed that call,” said Sgt. Joel Tranter, a police spokesman.
On Thursday, Leykis said he knew detectives were narrowing in on a suspect but police had asked he not talk about the case until given the ok.
“The amount of research and foot work it took to track down the suspect... they [Phoenix police] need to be saluted and I really appreciate what they did.”
