While the 4th of July is a very exciting time for you and your family, but it can be a stressful time for pets.

Loud noises can cause your dog or cat to act differently than they normally would.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control officials have several tips to keep your pets happy and safe:

Don't leave your pets outside, even if you normally do. A dog might try to esape by digging under a fence or could strangle himself trying to get away if tied up. Put your pet in a room and maybe even turn on a fan, radio or television. Some animals can become destructive, so it might even be good to put your pet in a room without windows. If you know your pet could become anxious you might want to talk to your veterinarian about available options.

Don't take your pet to a fireworks display, even if you're going to leave her in the car. The noise and lights can be frightening and make her try to escape. Besides, a car in summer, even at night, is too hot to leave a pet.

More animals are lost Fourth of July than any other time of year. Be sure your pet is wearing an appropriate-fitting collar.  If your pet does get lost, visit both of MCACC's Animal Care Centers every couple of days or post your pet's information around the neighborhood and online as well.
