A 24-year-old man trying to rescue a cat stuck on a Mesa power pole fell 30 feet to the ground on Thursday afternoon after the cat apparently jumped at him.

Officials from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the man had used his ladder to climb part of the way up the pole, then free-climbed the rest of the way near Crismon and Apache Trail.

The cat jumped at the man when he got to the top.

The man then accidently touched the power line, which shocked him.

Officials said he fell to the ground, landing on top of a pickup truck.

The man suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center.

The cat was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a similar incident from April, a cat was stuck atop a power pole in the same neighborhood.

It's unclear if this is the same cat.
