Comedian David Spade has given $10,000 to the Humane Society of the White Mountains in Lakeside, Arizona.
Shelter director Anna-Marie Rea says the star of CBS' "Rules of Engagement" visited the shelter last month. Rea said he promised to write a check and it arrived earlier this week.
Spade's mother volunteers at the shelter.
"His mother is a very active volunteer with the shelter. She's been helping us a lot, getting donations for us," Rea said, adding that Spade's brother will also help with construction. "Mom's got the whole family helping us out."
Rea also contradicted reports on Web sites that the shelter is falling apart and on the verge of closing.
"The roof is not falling down," Rea said. "We just got a fresh paint job outside ... and a nice new fence around the perimeter."
The funds will go toward building a puppy yard and a bigger dog park.
This is not the first time the Scottsdale native has donated money to causes based in Arizona.
Last year, Spade gave $25,000 to the family of a slain Phoenix police officer. He also gave $15,000 to his alma mater, Saguaro High School.
