A couple of Washington state families are taking recycling to a whole new level by re-purposing their own waste.
They convert every toilet flush into soil by using a composting toilet.
Makers of the toilets say they are effective biological converters of human and household "waste," that save money and energy.
The commode changes human waste into soil as it mixes with sawdust, peat moss, a little water and heat.
Curtis Erickson and his family opted for an environmental and economical change from septic tanks by having four composting toilets in their home.
C.J. Mayer and his family also own the composting toilets and use the mixture as a fertilizer for growing fruits and vegetables.
“The tomatoes are awesome. They grow huge from our own poop," he said.
Mayer planted an orchard of trees in the compost that he harvests from his toilets once every three months.
He says, “It’s a nice feeling to know you can do something like that.”
