St. Vincent de Paul was forced to temporarily close one of its pantries at 38th Street and Greenway Road because it didn't have any food.

St. Mary's Food Bank in Phoenix is the second largest in the country, next to New York City.

It gives out more pounds per individual in poverty than any other food bank.

But, the shelves at St. Mary's are starting to empty as the food is starting to go fast.

During the last 30 days, President and C.E.O. Terry Shannon said demand is up for emergency food baskets at St. Mary's between 30 and 40 percent.

Many clients are considered working poor, with part-time jobs that don't pay the bills.

But now, St. Mary's said more middle class families are asking for help.

In return, these families receive food baskets filled for a family, for three days.

"To this point, we haven't had to turn anyone away," said Shannon.

But he said if the demand continues to skyrocket, there's no way donations could keep up, especially during the holidays.
