Asteroid flying by Earth Friday: House-sized asteroid flies between Earth and the moon

PHOENIX - A house-sized asteroid discovered earlier this month flew within 60,000 miles of Earth early Friday.

Yahoo.com reported that the rock, called asteroid 2012 TC4, was about 56 feet wide and was expected to come within 59,000 miles of Earth Friday. That distance is about one-fourth the distance from Earth to the moon, according to Yahoo.

NASA reportedly discovered the asteroid on October 4 and has been tracking it ever since.

The asteroid made its closest approach just before 11 p.m. Arizona time Thursday, or 2 a.m. Eastern, according to Phys.org .
