After sending a request for pick-up with your current location included, a Lyft driver will meet you in their own car and drive you wherever you need to go.
Once you've arrived, the app calculates a "donation" amount to pay the driver. By making the payment optional, the company can avoid regulations that apply to cabs and car services.
Wannabe drivers, sign up with Lyft online. They receive background and DMV checks and are required to attend an in-person meeting. In one to two weeks they can be working for Lyft and earning up to $35 an hour.
