Phoenix man saves tiny ground squirrel from drowning in pool

A tiny ground squirrel owes a Phoenix man a huge thank you after he pulled the small critter from a pool and saved its life.

The man, Rick Gruber, was installing a pool heater at a home when he heard splashing noises coming from the pool. Gruber looked over and saw a ground squirrel struggling to keep his head above water.

Gruber then ran to his truck to get a piece of PVC pipe to try to reach the squirrel but when he returned the small animal was no longer moving and his head was submerged in the water. In the hour-long video Gruber posted on his YouTube channel, he explains that he wanted to save the squirrels life. He also says that he began recording after he started trying to resuscitate the critter who was unconscious and not breathing.

Gruber initially began pushing on his stomach and chest to try to find his lungs to get him to breathe.  The animal moved after a few compressions and then Gruber placed it on a piece of PVC pipe to try to get the water out of his lungs.

Throughout the video Gruber rubbed the squirrels back as it regained strength to move again. Once the animal was breathing normally, Gruber placed it on his knee pad where the critter sat for a while before getting up and moving around.

The squirrel seemed to make a full recovery as the video ends with it running off.
