New ‘internal bra' promises long-lasting lift

Women undergoing breast lift or breast reduction surgery could also be in the market for a new device that would give them a permanent push-up.

The Orbishape system is like a sling for breast tissue that gets surgically attached to the rib cage by silicone threads and titanium screws, ABC NEWS reported.

Orbix Medical CEO Yozzi Mazel said the device is like an internal bra.

“Think of it as a hammock that sits underneath your breast to keep it supported, or like the bottom part of an underwire bra,” Mazel said.

Why would you need the Orbishape after having breast lift surgery? Mazel said that traditional breast lifts often begin to sag within months, and the Orbishape provides additional support.

In medical trials, Mazel said breasts remained perky for at least five years and that the implant isn’t meant  to be a stand-alone procedure.

The Orbishape also helps patients heal faster and reduces the appearance of surgery scars, Mazel said. It also doesn’t interfere with mammograms.

The new device, which is approved for use in some European countries, will undergo review by the FDA for use in the U.S. sometime later this year, Mazel said.

The cost is unclear, but insurance companies could pick up the tab for breast cancer patients undergoing reconstructive surgery.
