Disney drops bid to trademark 'Dia de los Muertos' for upcoming movie

PHOENIX - After raising the ire of critics online, Yahoo is reporting Disney has dropped its plans to trademark the phrase "Dia de los Muertos," the name of a traditional Mexican holiday.

The entertainment company filed trademark applications on May 1 for the phrase as it relates to an upcoming animated film by Pixar, Mexican news site Animal Politico reports.

The studio still is moving forward on its Pixar project inspired by Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations, it has withdrawn its application to trademark "Dia de los Muertos" for various merchandising applications.

El Dia de los Muertos, or "The Day of the Dead," is a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico, Central America and the United States. It honors deceased loved ones and is often associated with Halloween.
