MESA, AZ - A high-ranking Mesa police official is under investigation for allegedly accessing a city computer database improperly.
A Mesa police spokesman confirmed that Commander Kathy Kirkham was the subject of an internal affairs probe.
In a written statement, a spokesman said, "I can tell you there is an on-going Internal Affairs Investigation involving Commander Kathy Kirkham entitled ‘unauthorized access to a computer database.' Until the investigation AND all subsequent appeal processes are concluded, I have no further details for you."
Sources tell the ABC15 Investigators that Kirkham has been under investigation for months and that the commander may have worked with another police employee to improperly access information from the city's computers without permission.
Kirkham has been with the Mesa Police department for nearly two decades. At one point, she was promoted to assistant chief and was overseeing the investigations bureau, according to a 2011 city news release.
She was terminated just three days before her 20th anniversary with the department, union officials said.
The Mesa Police Association wouldn't comment on the investigation.
But the union said that investigation against Kirkham was launched shortly after she filed an EEOC complaint with the city.
