Which credit card customers are most satisfied?

American Express customers are happiest with their credit cards.

That's the sixth consecutive year the card has come in first in J.D. Power and Associate's 2012 U.S . Credit Card Satisfaction Study. On a 1,000 point scale, American Express customers gave it, on average, a satisfaction score of 807.

Discover card came in a close second, at 799, and Chase's credit card came in below that, at 762 points in the study.

J.D. Power and Associate's surveyed nearly 14,000 credit card customers about their credit card terms, billing and payment, interaction, rewards, benefits and services and problem resolution. The ABC15 Investigators get complaints about many of these issues all the time. 

Bank of America's credit card was one of the lowest rated, and HSBC's came in last in the study.

So, what does this study mean to you? Use this information to learn how to pick the best card for your needs.

First, there are two types of credit card users: revolvers and transactors, according to the study. Revolvers carry a balance a balance over time, paying it off in pieces. Transactors, on the other hand, pay off your balance every month.

If you're a revolver, J.D. Power and Associate's recommends looking for the credit cards with the best rates on balances and payment. A look at bankrate.com shows the lowest rate with excellent credit at less than 11 percent.

If you're a transactor, they recommend that you look for good rewards programs – you could find yourself with a good deal on a flight or some extra cash on hand. Bankrate.com's lowest reward card rate is just over 15 percent.

So shop around. There are a lot of reward programs looking for new customers right now.
