SCOTTSDALE, AZ - It seemed like a small problem with a simple solution.
"All I wanted was for the water to be aimed away from my house."
Carol Till says water from the sprinklers caused cracks in the mortar, allowing water to find its way into her walls ending up on her bathroom floor.
She would have taken care of the sprinklers herself but the Scottsdale woman says that would be against the HOA rules.
"We've been told we cannot adjust, move, and even touch the sprinklers. I don't know what they would do, but sounds like I would go to jail, “she laughed.
So she wrote the management company, and they forwarded the information along with an estimate to fix the damage, to the HOA.
Days passed, and Till says nothing changed except the color of the bathroom grout from the water damage.
After a few weeks of using towels to soak up the standing water, she emailed them again asking what was going on.
She says she got a response saying that someone would get in touch with her but says that never happened.
"It was like I was a non-person," she explained.
After more than three months of getting nowhere, Till let me know.
"Well then all of a sudden I had a phone call, I had the Grounds Committee over here, they wanted to know what was going on," said Till.
Till says within two days of contacting us, the sprinklers were turned off.
And she says she was reimbursed for part of the damage she says was done to her home.
The grass outside of her house might be dead but it's a price Till is willing to pay to keep the water out.
"But I feel like it didn't have to get to this point," said Till.
One big lesson we all can learn from Till's story is to document everything.
Communicating through email rather than phone can be really helpful if you have to justify your claim.
Also being proactive about things like getting a quote to fix damage, follow up emails, and taking pictures of any damage.
