New Microsoft tech support scam targeting past victims

PHOENIX - The Microsoft tech support scam has been around for a few years now.

It's the one where someone claiming to be from the software giant calls and tries to convince you to give them control of your computer remotely so that they can fix some make believe problem.

Once you do, they take over your computer and hold it hostage until you wire them the money to release it, if you're lucky.

Well viewer Judy let me know about a new way those same scammers are trying to rip her off again!

In an email she writes, "I was copied on an email today saying I had paid $339 to Microsoft and they are trying to return my money. I was scammed by this supposedly legitimate posing as Microsoft. I had to change my bank accounts. I received several phone calls wanting to return the $139. I did pay them but this is the first e-mail now telling me they want to return $339.00. Would appreciate your help exposing them."

She was being contacted by the "Microsoft Refund Department," according to the bogus email. And all she needs to do to get her money back is "verify some casual information like, your phone number, city, and zip code."

Maybe these scammers found a conscience, but I doubt it.

It's much more likely these guys are trying to take advantage of their past victims, for a second time.

Microsoft never makes calls or sends emails like these.

So ignore, throw away, let go to voice mail, and for goodness sakes don't reply, to any correspondence they try to fool you with.
