5 key steps to protect yourself from hackers

Is your computer safe from hackers?

With news of the massive breach by a Russian crime ring, it's important for everyone to protect themselves.

At home, that starts with your router. Just plugging it in, is not enough.

"It says its a Linksys modem, that's what's being broadcast," says Ken Colburn of Data Doctors.

"Every hacker on the planet knows every default password of every device on the planet," he says.

That means changing the default password to something else.

Colburn recommends using at least 15 characters.

And he says you need to name your WiFi something that doesn't become a target.

"Something that doesn't ID you. Don't use your last name. Don't advertise that it's you," he says.

Colburn also says:

-Create different profiles for you and your child

-When setting up your router security settings---don't use W-E-P-- it's less protective against hacking

-Make sure to constantly update your browsers, security products and run on your computer to keep hackers out
