A man being evicted from a Mesa hotel has been charged with aggravated assault after taking a hostage, and shooting a woman.

According to reports, 37-year-old Jose Luis Gonzales, who was on parole from a 2005 crime, was informed on November 7 that he was being evicted from the hotel he was staying at in Mesa.

That’s when police say Gonzales took matters into his own hands.

Police say Gonzales pulled a .45 caliber pistol from a duffel bag and held it to man’s head. The victim’s brother tried to intervene, that’s when Gonzales allegedly struck the brother with the gun causing it to fire off two shots.

One of the shots fired went through a hotel room, through the air condition unit, and struck a woman causing her entire knee to rupture. The second shot went into another room, but no one was hit.

According to officers, after Gonzales fired the shots he released the victim and fled.

Police were able to locate him a week later and take him into custody.

Gonzales is being charged with aggravated assault.
