Police report that on February 3, 2017, just before 7 p.m. officers responded to 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road for a collision involving a pedestrian and a truck. A witness told police that the pedestrian was crossing on McDowell Road when he was struck and sent airborne.

The truck failed to stop after the collision, and the witness, who was in the car behind the truck, pursued it as it entered the Interstate 10 freeway heading west. The witness got the license plate number and returned to the scene of the wreck.

Police say the plate number returned to 69-year-old Ferbronio Avalos of Buckeye. Buckeye police officers were alerted and waiting for Avalos when he returned home. Police there noticed the truck had extensive front-end damage.

The victim was transported to the hospital with critical injuries and died a few days later. Family members tell ABC15 that the victim was recovering from prostate cancer surgery at the time he was struck by Avalos.

Avalos has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
