A Mesa upskirting suspect says he was detained for "being a creep."

On Friday night, Mesa police responded to the Walmart store near Signal Butte and Baseline roads, for a report of a man taking pictures up the skirts of different women.

Police made contact with the store manager who was following 19-year-old Deion Hosteen Avery in the store, via surveillance cameras.

Store management was alerted by a woman who reportedly told them that Avery was standing very close to her when he crouched down facing away from her but had his cell phone under her dress.

The victim reportedly walked away from Avery, but he allegedly followed her and tried a second time.

Police detained Avery, and when they asked if he knew why he was being held, Avery reportedly said, "for being a creep."

Avery is facing two counts of unlawful surreptitious photographing.
