Police say a man impersonated a U.S. Marshall to impress a girl and tried to take a weapon into a Mesa bar.

Mesa police report that on August 5, 38-year-old Peter Ishmael McMillan was stopped by security at Denim and Diamonds Bar, near Main Street and Sossaman Road, as he was entering the bar.

Security noticed a silver handgun on his hip and told McMillan he could not enter the bar with the gun. McMillan responded by showing them a U.S. Marshal's badge. He was informed again that he was not allowed into the bar with the firearm.

McMillan went to the parking lot and remained there. Later that night Mesa police officers arrived to work there in an off-duty capacity and were informed about McMillan by security.

The Mesa officers approached McMillan and asked him if he was indeed a U.S. Marshal and McMillan reportedly said he was not. He said the badge belonged to his father and he was using it to impress a girl.

Mesa police found two outstanding warrants and arrested McMillan.

He has been charged with impersonating a peace officer.
