A Phoenix man attacked and killed his father with a baseball bat in north Phoenix last week.

Phoenix police report that on July 2 they responded to an apartment near 19th Avenue and Cactus Road for an assault.

Police say 42-year-old Rickie Neil Hammon Jr. called his mother in northern Arizona, telling her he had gotten into a fight with his father and, "would be going to jail."

The mother called and asked another family member to check on the victim. They reportedly found the father, Rickie Hammon Sr., bloodied and unresponsive on the couch. Phoenix Fire paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police say the suspect also texted his girlfriend saying, "He's not breathing," before leaving the apartment.

Hammon was caught by police near the apartment complex.

He allegedly admitted that "he punched his father multiple times and hit him with a baseball bat."

Hammon is being held on a $500,000 bond for second-degree murder.
