A man and a woman have been arrested after taking car keys from a woman inside an elevator at a Mesa apartment complex.

Mesa police report that on November 3, a couple followed the victim into an elevator at her apartment complex near University Drive and Dobson Road.

Police say 22-year-old Clayton William Tafoya and 29-year-old Nikki Marie Lewis were in the elevator with the victim when Lewis allegedly pulled a cloth back revealing a handgun.

Tafoya then told the victim, "we're going to borrow your car," as he grabbed the lanyard form her neck, that had the keys.

A Mesa police helicopter located the car at another apartment complex near Extension Road and Main Street. Officers moved in and arrested the couple, who reportedly attempted to enter an occupied apartment unit.

Police say the victim’s lanyard and wallet were located, hidden in the rear of the patrol car after Tafoya was removed. The gun was found under a doormat outside of the apartment where they were arrested.

Police say Lewis was found to have methamphetamines and a knife located in her bra.

Both suspects are both being held on $100,000 bond on charges of aggravated assault, car theft and aggravated robbery.
