A man was caught trespassing at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, west of Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office reports that on February 2, just before noon a man drove through a security checkpoint at Palo Verde, getting about 950 feet inside the fenced facility before being detained by security personnel.

MCSO says 24-year-old Carlos Gonzalez traveled through the exit lane of the manned checkpoint and failed to stop. Security personnel immediately locked down the facility. MCSO says Gonzalez stopped his vehicle about 950 feet inside the main gate and was arrested without incident.

In a statement to ABC 15 APS said, “Palo Verde’s security procedures worked as designed, and we collaborated with local law enforcement to determine there was no threat to the plant or public.”

Gonzalez reportedly told investigators that he was traveling to California when he saw signs for the nuclear generating station and went there, "to speak to the head engineer, to help them with their work."

Gonzalez has been charged with criminal trespassing of a commercial nuclear generating station.
