A man in Goodyear was able to defend himself from being stabbed, by using a portable air conditioning unit as a shield.

Goodyear police report that on August 10, a man, later identified as Aurelio Ramos Pulido, 53, went to the home of his ex-wife and pounded on the door.

A worker was in the backyard of the home near Van Buren Street and Dysart Road fixing a portable air conditioning unit. He heard the commotion and went to investigate.

He allegedly saw Pulido arguing with the victim and calling her names. Pulido retrieved a 9-inch kitchen knife and chased the worker into the backyard. He tried several times to stab the worker in the face, but the man blocked the knife, using the A/C unit as a shield.

The woman tried to pull Pulido away from the man, and Pulido began to chase her back into the house where she fell. He stabbed her several times in the arms, legs and stomach.

Police say the woman was stabbed ten times and needed 14 staples to close the wounds on her arm and thigh.

Pulido was located by police in the parking lot of a restaurant about two miles away. Pulido reportedly told police that he "lost it." He also said he stopped the attack when he realized his 4-year-daughter was watching.

Pulido then ran away after stabbing himself in the stomach.

Pulido has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
