12-year-old gets family to fight fat together and get in shape

PARADISE VALLEY, AZ - At first glance, it seems like your typical gym workout. But, look a little closer and you may notice a pre-teen doing some heavy lifting.

"I didn't feel very comfortable. I was kind of embarrassed on my size on the clothing," Jackson Schumacher told us.

So, the 6th grader reached out to his mom.

"I heard him say, I want to work out.  Help me," Jackson's mother, Angela Gibbs said.

That's when she and Jackson joined Orangetheory Fitness.

"It's the best of group exercise and personal training all in one," says Daren Parks, Orangetheory studio manager.

A fitness coach tells you what to do and when to do it. Eventually, the entire family joined, working out 3, 4, sometimes 5 times a week! With that group commitment, everything started to change.

From the family's finances…

"We have brought down our takeout, carryout bill by more than 70 percent," Angela explains.

... to the number on the scale.

"I've lost about 10 pounds," Jackson says.

"34 pounds, 28 inches," says Gibbs.

She says she feels incredible and it has made her a better mom.

"I have more patience," Gibbs explains.

There are even noticeable changes in Jackson. "Much more confident and not as uptight," Gibbs says.

Now, this family has a bond and it's all because this mom listened to her 12-year-old.

"I'm proud of her," Jackson says.

Orangetheory Fitness has several locations in the Valley and even offers nutrition coaching as part of the package deal.
