10 Questions for Valley news icon Kent Dana

PHOENIX - It isn't always the big events that make us turn our head when we hear about politicians, celebrities and athletes.

Sometimes, we just want to know that when you boil it down, they're all ordinary people like us.

What's in their fridge? What are they reading? What do they do in their off time? ABC15.com is asking the same 10 questions of a newsmaker. But don't jump to any conclusions; these aren't the typical interview questions.

They are not meant to be probing or controversial. Instead, they're fun questions that let you get to know the person in ways you probably don't already.

This week, we're getting to know longtime Valley news anchor Kent Dana.

Dana is a proud Phoenician, born and raised in Phoenix, Ariz.

Many would say he was destined to be a star. At the young age of 5, his mother entered him into a baby beauty pageant (read more at question #8) and he walked away with the crown. At 11, he was selected as the best child actor in Arizona. But it would ultimately be broadcasting where Dana would leave an indelible mark.

Over the next quarter-century, Dana earned the distinction of being the single most recognizable Phoenix television personality. In 2009, the trusted and longtime journalist known as the "Tom Brokaw of Phoenix" ended his 30-plus-year run as a TV news anchorman for KPNX and KPHO.

Dana was inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2009.

The loving father of 6 is still living in the Valley today and enjoys hiking up Pinnacle Peak, boating on Lake Powell and spending quality time with his family. He adds, however, broadcasting will always be in his blood so don't be surprised if you see him pop up on a Valley television station again.
