MESA, Ariz. - It isn't always the big events that make us turn our head when we hear about politicians, celebrities and athletes.
Sometimes, we just want to know that when you boil it down, they're all ordinary people like us.
What's in their fridge? What are they reading? What do they do in their off time? ABC15.com asks the same 10 questions of a news maker. But don't jump to any conclusions; these aren't the typical interview questions.
They are not meant to be probing or controversial. Instead, they're fun questions that let you get to know the person in ways you probably don't already.
This week, we are learning more about Miss Arizona 2011, Jennifer Sedler.
As the reigning queen, Jennifer is busy this week representing Arizona in the Miss America 2012 pageant from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Her pageant platform is "Making a Difference in the Lives of Children with Life Threatening Illnesses: Support For HopeKids."
Until her crowning as Miss Arizona, Jennifer reigned as Miss Phoenix. She attended Hamilton High School in Chandler and is currently enrolled at the University of Arizona Honors College of Medicine. The 20-year-old aspires to graduate with honors, attend medical school and become a Pediatric Oncologist.
Jennifer has been dancing since she was a little girl and competes internationally. In fact it was her dance instructor who encouraged her to compete in the Miss Arizona pageant in 2010, which she won the following year. Jennifer will be performing an original jazz routine during the Miss America talent competition.
Jennifer is asking for your support to earn a guaranteed spot as a Top 15 finalist in Miss America 2012. Watch now and vote for Jennifer's contestant video. You can catch the 2012 Miss America Pageant LIVE on ABC15 Saturday, January 14 at 8 p.m.
10 Questions for Miss Arizona Jennifer Sedler
1. What is your all-time favorite song?
My all time favorite song is Steer by Missy Higgins. It's been a favorite of mine for many years because of its inspirational message which is a reminder that we have control over the course of our lives.
2. Do you have a Smartphone? If so, what's your favorite app?
I just recently got an iPhone, and I am a complete addict to the "Pinterest" app. I'm such a crafty DIY woman, and Pinterest always has fun new ideas for me. Of course, it usually ends up distracting me for way too long!
3. Have you come up with a few things you'd like to do before you die? If so, what's on your bucket list?
I actually do have a bucket list, but it is constantly changing. One thing that has been on it for a while is to write a song. I love writing poetry and lyrics, but have absolutely zero music-writing knowledge, so I may have to get a little help with this one.
4. Who do you count as your mentor(s)?
Well foremost I have my parents, who have been providing me with direction through support for everything I've ever done. But during this year as Miss Arizona, I have had a number of people step up to help guide me. Some of my favorite mentors are the former Miss Arizonas. They're women who I admire for having done such an extraordinary job during their reign, and are among the few who understand what I am going through. They have been real role models for me as they have offered endless advice and tips to ensure this year is as wonderful as possible.
5. What was your very first job?
My first job was working in retail at the mall. I wasn't real smart about it because I chose my favorite clothing store to which I was offered a fabulous employee discount. The result: spending way too much of my paychecks on stylish tops. But hey, it helped my appearance wardrobe for this year! ;)
6. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I am overly enthusiastic about whatever I do. Therefore, sometimes, I end up caring so much and working so hard that I forget to take time to slow down and enjoy the moment. I have the phrase "It's about the journey" hanging in my room (among many other quotes) to remind me to take pleasure in the expedition as much as the arrival.
7. What do you consider your greatest success?
During my year as Miss Arizona, I am working to support children with life-threatening illnesses. I feel triumphant when I see the children laughing and smiling with their friends and family, knowing that I helped provide them with a little bit of hope and joy in their battle. To know that they have allowed me to be a part of their lives and their journey-there's no greater success to me than that.
8. Tell us something about you most people don't know?
Most people probably wouldn't guess that I am a complete science nerd! I always look forward to physiology courses, where I am able to study how the human body functions. One of my favorite courses was when I was able to dissect a human brain and learn its functions. It really changes how you think (no pun intended) about your own body and is entirely fascinating.
If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?
Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, and John Lennon. I would love to know more about each of them…then they could help me write my song. ;)
10. If you could have a different career, other then what you're doing now, what would it be?
Well Miss Arizona is only a one-year job, and if I win Miss America it would last for a year from this month. So when I'm finished, I'm going to return to school at the University of Arizona Honors College of Medicine and continue studying to become a Pediatric Oncologist. Especially after my experiences this year, I can't imagine doing anything else.
