A federal investigation is underway into how defective tires end up on the road.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, only about one in five recalled tires are actually returned to the manufacturer.
In a report, ABC News found millions of them remain on store shelves, still in use and some are simply unaccounted for.
The report blames, what ABC calls “a badly-flawed and archaic government recall system."
Triple AAA Operations Manager Gary Bons, in Arizona says the hot weather is very damaging to tires.
Make sure to:
- Check age of tires
- Do a quarter test. If the head of George Washington isn't covered by the tread, you need to get a new tire.
- Check tire pressure once a month.
