"It's Never Too Late"

Plastic Surgery Is For All Ages

Due to the media we are all driven to seek perfection. This is in our jobs, our families; it is also in our physical appearance. Plastic surgery today is not only for the rich and famous, it is for all ages from our early 20s into our 70s. There are procedures specific for every patient population that can be quite rewarding with minimal down time, little or no pain, with tremendous results.
In the 20- to 30-year-old age group the most common procedures performed are breast augmentation, liposuction, and correction of congenital deformities. These deformities include ear correction, nasal correction, and post traumatic reconstruction. During this time period this age group utilizes common skin care treatments. These include chemical peel, skin care products for wrinkle removal, pigmentation treatments, Botox, fillers, skin needling and permanent makeup.
In the 30 and 40 year age group, the most common surgical procedures are the "Mommy Makeover" which includes a breast augmentation with tummy tuck or body liposuction. Most patients that have this procedure are beginning to show some facial sagging and loss of volume.  Blepharoplasty (eyelid correction) is commonly performed on this age group as well. Skin care treatments are intensified with this patient group. Chemical peels, skin lightening treatments, wrinkle removal treatments are performed by Aestheticians. Botox and facial fillers such as Juvederm, Sculptra, Radiesse and Artefill are utilized to treat wrinkles. Volume replacement is now addressed with the above fillers as well as fat transfers.
In the 50 year and older age group, two categories of surgeries are commonly performed. Those involving the face and those involving the body. As for facial procedures, the QuickLift, (weekend facelift) is commonly preformed to remove skin laxity, to move the muscle into the appropriate position on the face and neck, remove wrinkles and restore a beautiful jowl line and facial contour. This is performed with minimal pain and little downtime. Patients are often back to work in a few days. Blepharoplasty, correction of the eyelids is preformed in this age group quite commonly to remove bags and wrinkles around the eyes and excess skin in the eyelid region.  Facial volume replacement with the use of fillers and fat is commonly performed on these patients along with resurfacing techniques of the face, neck, arms and hands with chemical peels such as the Hetters peel, TCA peels and routine home skin care. Body procedures preformed include breast augmentation/lifting procedures, tummy tuck and liposuction procedures. These patients respond quite well because this age group has become much more body conscious and is in better physical condition than 20 years ago.
It is very important for all patients having any cosmetic procedures or treatments to research their surgeon. They should go to their respected Board; the surgeon should be certified in Facial Plastic Surgery or General Plastic Surgery. They should be active professors and preceptors in the field of Plastic Surgery. This commonly involves teaching other surgeons from across the country their craft. They should have hospital privileges for all surgeries they perform and have a proven track record.
The key to individuals having a successful surgical experience is appropriate pre-operative medical clearance. All patients that come into the practice have some form of routine clearance. This includes routine lab work for those less than 40 years of age, and mammograms for all patients having breast augmentation. For those patients greater than 40 years of age routine lab work along with chest x-ray, EKG and clearance from their primary physician or specialist is usually obtained.
It is important to have a good relationship with your surgeon. Your goals should be defined and realistic expectations should be set prior to the procedure. A full discussion of the procedure and all risk and benefits should be preformed for all patients. Photographs should be visualized and new patients should have the opportunity to speak with prior surgical patients regarding their surgical procedure. The knowledge of the procedure from start to finish and full understanding of the healing process should occur for every procedure.
To conclude, plastic surgery spans all ages. It is important to have realistic expectations and understand the procedures or treatments one is going to undertake. This will provide the best result and patient satisfaction.
