Carving a Trinket Box
This month's Sonoran Living project coincides with our new class additions. We are offering an expanded schedule featuring new cabinet, furniture, carving, and finishing classes. Check our class listings for details.
The Trinket box is a great gift idea for any occasion especially for Mothers Day. A class is scheduled before Mothers day.
This class offers instruction in two different woodworking skills. Carving is used to embellish the box lid. Any number for designs maybe used to personalize the project. The second skill is box construction.
You will also learn to construct a "Trinket Box" using spine joinery. It is an easy, attractive, yet strong assembly method. We used basswood for this project. It is ideal for carving yet strong enough for box construction. It can be stained or painted
The first step to the project is to carve the lid. Trace the design pattern over transfer paper and mark the lid with the pattern. Using a Flexcut detail knife follow and cut the lines outlining the pattern. Use a Flexcut #2 gouge to remove the background material. WoodCraft offers a full line of Flexcut carving tools for this and any carving project. Again using the detail knife make stop cuts and relief angle cuts where depth is needed for effect. Deeper cuts produce more of a 3-dimentional effect. Make sure the cuts are clean.
After completing the carving sand the project with 220 grit sand paper. We offer a Norton 3 pack of sand paper that will do the job. Remove all the dust and either stain using a Gel stain or for and old fashioned look paint with milk paint you could it us acrylic paint if you like for more color. You are ready for the box construction the assembly part of this class utilizes the SawStop tablesaw, Kreg Router Table and clamps.
Except for finishing this project can be started and completed in a one day class,
