WHAT IS A XERISCAPE LANDSCAPE?

Xeriscape (zeer-i-skeyp) comes from the Greek word xeric (meaning arid or dry) and landscape. It is a term that defines a creative approach to landscaping that includes the use of desert-adapted plants, efficient irrigation, careful design, and proper maintenance. Using the seven principles of Xeriscape will produce superior landscapes that can save both water and energy:

·    Proper landscape planning & design
·    Soil improvements & grading
·    Appropriate maintenance
·    Low-water-use plants
·    Mulch use
·    Appropriate turf areas
·    Efficient irrigation

Xeriscape also creates or replaces native habitat used by wildlife and helps to provide shade for people, homes, and communities. Everything needs updating every so often and landscapes are no exception. With over half of a household’s water flowing outdoors, rehabbing a thirsty landscape of excessive turf and high-water-use plants into a beautiful Xeriscaped yard not only makes sense, it’s also water wise! Xeriscape yards are typically easier to maintain, use less water, and encourage visits by native pollinators, such as birds and butterflies.
