When making a big decision like where to bank, there are many factors to take into consideration. What institution provides the best rates, offers the most convenient services, or lowest surcharges? But beyond the most common questions, lingers perhaps the most important: 'How will this bank serve me?'

When evaluating the benefits and costs, experts suggest comparing your big bank choices with a local credit union or two.

According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index 2015 survey, credit unions actually fared higher than big banks in overall satisfaction scores. This statistic could be attributed to the fact that credit unions are cooperatives owned by their members, creating a natural shift of focus to members instead of shareholders.

While many people still believe that a credit union is a place to keep your rainy day savings, today's credit unions offer all of the accounts, loans, services and conveniences you would expect to find at a bank, but with all of the benefits of being a credit union member. While big banks advertise the convenience of the ATM or branch around the corner, some credit unions have joined forces to offer their members the same easy cash access with a CO-OP ATM network and shared branch alliance. This large network includes almost 30,000 surcharge-free cash machines, and shared branching gives members the ability to conduct in-person transactions at more than 5,000 branches across the country.

Additionally, the 2015 CUNA Membership Benefits Report estimates that credit union members in the U.S. saved nearly $8.5 billion in fiscal 2015 year by doing business at a credit union instead of a bank.
