Properly maintaining a septic system is important in order to prevent backups and ensure proper operation. The septic tank itself should be cleaned of collected solids every two to three years. It is also wise to stagger bathing and washloads in order to avoid overloading the system. In addition, do not put paint thinner, pesticides, photographic chemicals, motor oil, grease, fat, coffee grounds, papertowels, or facial tissue into drains or toilets leading to the septic system. Use chemical drain cleaners, laundry detergents, toilet bowl cleaners, and bleach sparingly. Outdoors, it is best to direct the runoff from roof gutters away from cesspool drainage fields. And do not drive or park over drainage fields, as pipe damage may occur. Beware of using commercial septic tank treatments. They can liquefy sludge which can then flow into the cesspool or drainage fields and clog them. To help your septic system flow smoothly, mix one half pound of brewer's yeast in warm water and flush it down the toilet every six months. For more information on septic system maintenance, consult a septic system specialist or a plumber.
