2014 Oscars: Catch up on Best Picture nominees while it rains this weekend

PHOENIX - The Valley is finally set to get some rain, just in time for movie buffs to catch up on this year’s Oscar Best Picture nominees.

It'll be the perfect time to stay inside and see some excellent performances, great storytelling and beautiful cinematography, from “Her” to “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

All of the movies that topped the Oscar list this year are playing in theaters around the Valley, so you still have an opportunity to grab some popcorn and enjoy the best of 2013’s filmmaking.

“American Hustle”

This story of a con man, his wife and his mistress and their quest to outwit an FBI agent is still in local first-run theaters. You can catch it at multiple AMC and Harkins theaters across the Valley. Check out AMCTheatres.com and HarkinsTheatres.com for times and locations.

“Captain Phillips”

A shipping boat captain gets captured by Somali pirates in this film, based on a true story. It’s still playing at AMC Arizona Center and cheap seats theater Silver Cinemas’ Bell Road location. Check out AMCTheatres.com and SilverCinemasInc.com for showtimes.

“Dallas Buyers’ Club”

Watch Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto’s fantastic performances in this story about a man with HIV who smuggles medications into the U.S. from Mexico. Like "Captain Phillips", this Oscar nominee has already made its way to DVD, so head to your nearest store or Redbox kiosk to score a copy.


The film delivers beautiful visuals of Earth from space and follows Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as they try to survive a disaster. Five AMC locations are still playing “Gravity”: Arizona Center, Ahwatukee, Desert Ridge, Deer Valley and Westgate. Check out AMCTheatres.com for showtimes.

While it won't look as impressive on the small screen, you can also opt to stay in and snuggle up with Bullock and Clooney on DVD.


This movie centers around modern life and our relationships with technology. Joaquin Phoenix plays a man who falls in love with an artificial intelligence system, played by Scarlett Johansson. An aging father gets a letter in the mail saying he’s won tons of money in a sweepstakes, so he and his son set out on a road trip to claim his winnings. The show is now playing at AMC’s Ahwatukee and Desert Ridge locations. Check out AMCTheatres.com for showtimes.

"Nebraska" is also just out on DVD, so head to Redbox for a movie night in, without breaking the bank.


Based on a book by a BBC journalist, this movie follows Philomena, played by Judi Dench, as she tries to find the son she gave up for adoption. Multiple Harkins and AMC locations across the Valley are showing “Philomena.” For showtimes, check out AMCTheatres.com or HarkinsTheatres.com .

“12 Years a Slave”

Before the Civil War, a free Black man living in New York is captured and sold into slavery. Throughout the next 12 years, the man tries to stay alive, until he meets a Canadian abolitionist who changes his life forever. “12 Years a Slave” is still playing at multiple Harkins and AMC locations throughout the Valley. “The Wolf of Wall Street”

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker who represents the height of greed. This film follows Belfort as he lives the high life, from money to women to power. “Wolf of Wall Street” is playing at AMC and Harkins locations across the Valley and at UltraStar’s Scottsdale Pavilion and the luxury iPic Theaters in Scottsdale.
