Phoenix summer fun: 50+ things to do, places to go to beat Arizona's summer heat

PHOENIX -
When the thermometer hits 100+ degrees in Arizona, you tend to avoid the outdoors.

It’s what you do.

But, that doesn’t mean, you can’t go out and have fun inside somewhere else.

Because of this week’s record-breaking heat, here are more than 50 places you can go around town to avoid the heat and have some fun. Scroll down to check out the possibilities.

Visit an aquarium:

Escape the heat and spend some time admiring the animals of the sea at one of our aquariums around town. Depending on which one you pick, you can see sharks, penguins, crabs and a lot of fish. Butterfly Wonderland is known for its large butterfly atrium, but it also has large fish from the Amazon in its “Tropical Waters of the World” exhibit.

Visit a museum:

Take a break from the heat and explore one of the Valley’s museums. The Arizona Science Center has three floors of interactive exhibits, demos, planetarium, and IMAX theater. The Phoenix Police Museum downtown is free and has a vintage police car, helicopter, and three-wheeled bike. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix has a lot of play areas and experiences for the little ones.

Go ice skating:

Just because it’s 100+ degrees out, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a bit of winter fun. Ice Den and AZ Ice offer “open skate” times throughout the week where you can rent skates and hit the ice. Chill Studio SK8 is a temporary indoor synthetic skating rink at The Shops at Norterra.

Go rollerblading or skating:

Lace up the blades and hit the roller rink around town. Skate to the music and work on your moves.

Be adventurous:

Are you an adrenaline hound? Don’t let the heat stop you. You have your choice of indoor rock climbing, indoor skydiving, and indoor go-karting at the places below. If you’re looking for a unique desert experience, you can chill out at the Polar Play Ice Bar, a family-friendly bar made entirely out of ice.

See a movie:

Avoid the heat with a tub of buttery popcorn and catch up on some of the new releases.

Play a game of laser tag:

Take your team to victory with a round or two of laser tag.

Play a round of indoor miniature golf:

To golf outside in the summer heat, you have to book an early tee time. Let yourself sleep in a bit and book a round of indoor miniature golf. You can work on your putting skills in time for the fall.

Go to the arcade:

Whether you’re looking to entertain the kids, or just need a night out, the arcade is always fun. Fight off some zombies with a slice of pizza, soda and the air conditioning.

Test your skill at an Escape room:

Grab a few of your friends and see if you can solve the puzzle and escape the room in time. No matter if you succeed or fail, you usually get a cool photo to post online.

Grab a cool treat:

Perhaps one of the best ways to stay cool in the summer is to reward yourself with a cool treat. From homemade Mexican pops to shaved ice to using nitrogen to make ice cream right before your eyes, Phoenix has a lot of places to cool down.

Go to the water park

Is there a better way to beat the heat than a day at the water park swimming in the pool or zipping down a waterslide? And it's fun! If you go, remember to keep safe by drinking plenty of water, wearing a lot of sunscreen and keeping cool when you can.
