PHOENIX - The Phoenix Zoo will celebrate its 50th birthday this weekend with special activities.
The party takes place on Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Robert Maytag, grandson of the founder of the Maytag appliance company came up with the idea of building a zoo in the city of Phoenix in 1961.
After his unexpected death in 1962, Robert's wife Nancy stepped up in her husband's place and along with individuals, families, clubs and companies coming forward to help the zoo was opened six months later.
At this weekend's events, guests will have the chance to create zoo exhibits of the future, check out veterinary gadgets from the past, take a photo with one of the six remaining foot tall bunnies that lined the Children's Zoo entrance, and much more.
