PHOENIX - Environmental regulators have extended an ozone health watch for the Phoenix metropolitan area through Tuesday.

The ozone health watch issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality had been scheduled to end Monday.

Ozone is an invisible gas created when other pollutants in the air -- such as those created by combustion-- are heated by the sun.

Experts say ozone can irritate the lungs and aggravate existing health conditions such as asthma.

A health watch is issued when ozone levels are expected to approach federal health standards.

Officials say people who are unusually sensitive to air quality should consider limiting their time outdoors.

According to the Maricopa County website, you should...

  • Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines, for example, at coffee shops, fast-food restaurants or banks. Park your car and go inside.
  • Unplug unused appliances.
  • Fuel your vehicle after dark or during cooler evening hours.
  • Connect your outdoor lights to a timer or use solar lighting.
