Supervision is the key to protecting lives, but there are other "layers of protection." Studies show 69% of drowning incidents occur when parental supervision fails and there are no other "backup layers" in use.

  1. Use high locks around access doors to the pool.
  2. Place alarms on all access doors.
  3. Place a pool safety barrier (fence) separating the pool from your home and all access doors and entrances.
  4. Water survival training for a child when he is capable of crawling or walking to the pool. Kids as young as 6 months can be trained to float on their backs when in a pool.
  5. CPR and your knowledge of rescue techniques. Contact your local fire department to see if and when they may be offering CPR classes.

*Using the "fail safe" layers of protection does not guarantee against all drownings. However it does creates layers of protection. All 5 must fail before your child can drown.
