PHOENIX - Freeway improvement work in the downtown Phoenix area will require southbound Interstate 17 ramp closures at the I-10 “Stack” interchange this weekend, as well as a Saturday night closure of the I-10 tunnel. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends drivers plan ahead and consider alternate routes if necessary while the following freeway restrictions are in place:

Southbound Interstate 17 ramps to east- and westbound Interstate 10 at the Stack interchange (south of McDowell Road) closed from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (August 9) for widening work. Southbound I-17 on-ramp at McDowell Road also closed. DETOUR: Consider accessing I-10 by exiting southbound I-17 at Thomas Road and using southbound 19th Avenue (for eastbound I-10) or southbound 27th Avenue (for westbound I-10). Drivers also can continue south on I-17 and connect with I-10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Northbound Interstate 17 narrowed to two lanes overnight between Indian School Road and Northern Avenue from 11 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday (August 7) for overhead sign work. Several on- and off-ramps in the area also closed overnight. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time or consider an alternate route while the overnight restriction is in place.

Westbound Interstate 10 closed overnight between Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue from 10 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (August 8) for tunnel cleaning and maintenance. Southbound State Route 51 and westbound Loop 202 ramps to westbound I-10 also closed. DETOUR: Consider using northbound I-17 starting near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport as an alternate route to bypass tunnel closure. I-10 traffic exiting at Seventh Street will detour on westbound McDowell Road.

Northbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) closed overnight at Union Hills Drive in the Peoria area from 11 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday (August 7) for bridge work. DETOUR: Traffic will go east on Union Hills Drive and north on 75th Avenue to reconnect with Loop 101.

Southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) ramp to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) in Tempe area closed overnight from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday (August 7) for barrier work. DETOUR: Consider exiting southbound Loop 101 to westbound McKellips Road and traveling south on McClintock Drive to reach Loop 202.

Southbound Interstate 17 narrowed to one lane overnight between Dixileta Drive and Happy Valley Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday (August 7) and from 10 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday (August 8) for freeway management system work. DETOUR: Please slow down and merge safely in work zone.
