Olympian Wu Minxia learns of family deaths after winning gold

The parents of a Chinese diver at the London Olympics withheld sad details about the family until after she won a third gold medal, according to a Wednesday report.

Yahoo.com said Wu Minxia’s parents did not tell her that both of her grandparents had died more than a year ago and her mother had been battling breast cancer until after she won the 3m Springboard at the 2012 games.

Her father reportedly said it was essential to keep the news from her, but it has sparked controversy.

Yahoo.com said athletes are often taken away from their families at a young age to train and Minxia left home to be part of a government aquatic sports institute.

Her father said he doesn’t think about things like enjoying family happiness and knows his daughter does not belong entirely to her family. Read more.
