FLAGSTAFF, AZ - The Phoenix Suns wrapped up five days in Flagstaff with an intra-squad scrimmage in front of a few thousand fans at the Walkup Skydome at Northern Arizona University.
Both the Black team and White team came out shooting in the first quarter, just as new head coach Jeff Hornacek said they would.
“They pushed it,” Hornacek said afterward. “I want to push it a little bit more, but for the most part they played well together.”
The Black team scored 33 points in the first quarter, but the White team started playing defense after that, limiting the Black team to just 41 points the rest of the way.
“It’ll become a natural reaction for them in a while,” Hornacek said. “They just need to play more physical and more aggressive on the ball and not be afraid of being burned, really sliding their feet and getting after it. It takes desire and a big effort level to play defense and we’ve got to get to that point.”
The Black team beat the White team by 3, 74-71, and players and coaches stayed for 30 minutes or more afterward to sign autographs.
“It was a great turnout,” Hornacek said. “I think that’s what guys wanted. They didn’t’ know what to expect in terms of how many people would come to watch them today. I think everyone’s happy with the turnout. We’re excited to get out in front of some fans every day.”
Gerald Green led all scorers with 21 points, hitting six shots from three point range, while Miles Plumlee scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
Newcomer Eric Bledsoe was impressive, with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Bledsoe hit 2 of 5 from three point range and 5 of 10 from the field.
After missing all of last season with an enlarged heart, Channing Frye finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds in a limited amount of playing time.
The Suns open pre-season play Monday night at U.S. Airways Center against Team Haifa from Israel.
